The Reason

Hi there!  Welcome to Louisville’s Guide for Picky Pizza Eaters.  If you’re still here after reading that title, you’re the kind of person I intended this writing to reach.  A little background information is necessary for this introductory post:

As the New Year approaches and resolutions are on our minds, wife and I want to set goals that won’t fail.  (No, that’s not a typo.  I call her “wife”.  She’s learned to accept it.)

So what resolution did we choose?  Hold on to your seats, it’s going to blow your blog-reading minds.  We chose to lose weight, get in shape, and be the healthiest us we could be.  How in the world does that inspire a blog about pizza?  Stay tuned, there’s more.

My wife and I are avid pizza lovers.  Well…let me rephrase that.  I like most pizza, and my wife likes pizza as long as it fits her very picky (in my opinion) criteria.  We got this crazy idea a while back in which we’d like to try all of the pizza places in Louisville.  Until now, that’s just been an idea we would occasionally discuss but never pursue.

As part of the “eat healthy, get in shape” resolution, which includes more home cooking, less fast food, and exercising more, we’ve already added in our cheat day.  With a cheat day we can look forward to, the hopes are that wife and I won’t fall off the wagon before March.  So, every week, we plan on trying a new pizza place around the Derby City.

As we discussed all of the places we planned on sampling, it became apparent how excited we were.  Then, today, I joked that we could write a guide to Louisville’s pizza scene and write it for all of the picky eaters like us (her) out there.  As that joke spiraled into a seemingly fun scenario, the inspiration for this blog was born.  I have to thank Katie (wife) for pushing me to start this, I’m already having a blast.

If you’re still reading, hi mom!  Oh…you’re not mom?  Well if you’re not my mom and you’re still here, then this is either some halfway decent writing or you’re waiting for me to get on with it and start telling you about how much pizza I ate before I fell into a pepperoni-induced coma.  I’m happy either way.

Before I get to the reviewing (which will be weekly, if all things go well), I’ll explain how I plan on implementing this experiment.  First and foremost, I am NOT a food critic.  I’m not qualified to tell you what wine it best pairs with or what spice the pizza is missing (though I might try).

I plan on using what I’m calling the SATA scale:  Service, Atmosphere, Taste, and Accessibility.  Those aren’t in order of preference; I just like acronyms (OMG, LOL).   Everything will be on a typical A, B, C with plus-minus grading scale; I’m not clever enough to put everything in terms of my own units (5 stars, 2 thumbs up, 6…high fives?  I don’t know).

For consistency, we’ll be ordering the same pizza everywhere we go:  pepperoni and cheese on the most popular crust, if they offer more than one type.  We also tend to go light on the sauce (wife’s preference, I LOVE saucy pizza), so we may ask for that at many places as well.  (I’ll also order sweet tea everywhere, and recommend the best ones for us southerners).  We’ll also make sure to take some home and try some reheated (wife) and some cold (me!) the next day to let you know which pizza performs in the “leftovers” category.  We’ll also post a picture of the pizza to show you how delicious it looked before we decimated it.

Lastly, my goal is not to find the perfect pizza, but to have fun writing this and to share our experience with any picky pizza eaters out there who might want to know what to expect before going out.  This will be my project for 2013, so I’ll be writing no matter how many comments or site visitors we get.  I sincerely hope you enjoy this, because I know I’m going to!
